Happy Birthday, Heavy Metal!

40 years ago today (February 13th), 4 guys from working-class England released an album. The album was the same name as their band. The opening riff to the album conjured up the most freightening of images. In its time, there was nothing like it. Little did those four guys know that they had unleashd what was to become the biggest and longest-living musical genre of all time. One song; one distorted guitar tone birthed countless bands and countless genre's all the world over. It's impossible to measure the impact this one event had on the world, from 40 years ago to still impacting every country on earth to this day.

That band is Black Sabbath.
The album is Black Sabbath.
The song is Black Sabbath.

Happy birthday, heavy metal.

David Ellefson rejoins Megadeth

Megadeth founder and frontman Dave Mustaine has announced the return of original bassist David Ellefson (1983-2002) to the iconic multi-platinum group. This reunion is appropriately timed to Megadeth’s upcoming historic month-long Rust In Peace 20th anniversary tour which launches March 1 in Spokane, WA. At these incredibly special shows, Megadeth will play their landmark, genre-defining 1990 album Rust In Peace in its entirety, in addition to other Megadeth favorites.

"This shows the power of brotherly love and forgiveness,” Mustaine says. “David Ellefson belongs in Megadeth. Next we are going to show you the power of getting your asses kicked...HARD!"

David Ellefson concurs: "This is a huge moment for all of us, band and fans alike. It is a great celebration of the music from one of the biggest landmark albums of our career."

Ellefson will join Mustaine and Megadeth band members Shawn Drover (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitar) on tour in support of the group’s current CD Endgame, which has received some of the highest critical accolades of the band’s career.

"We'd like to thank James LoMenzo for several years of loyal service on the bass, and wish him the very best," Mustaine adds.

Mastodon returns. AGAIN.

Mastodon was here last October with Dethklok, High on Fire, and Converge. The show was awesome.

They were also here in August or September at the Granada.

And I know for a fact that they've played The Granada again at least once (with Converge) and The Bottleneck at least once opening for someone.

Well, they're back.

The Volcom Tour at Liberty Hall on May 16th (that's 6 days after Converge + Coalesce at the Bottleneck)

Title Fight -- Lawrence, KS -- February 4th, 2010

A pretty good night for only $10! Lots of good bands and the crowd was pretty good as well. Great, fun music with friendly moshing and dancing.

The first band was Can't Stop. They play pretty standard punk music that delves sometimes into hardcore. I think it would've been much better, but the band didn't seem to interested or excited for the show. And the singer didn't do clean vocals very well at all. Not terrible, but not really good either. 7/10

Holy crap! The next band was The Runaway Sons. Before I left for the show, I was checking out the bands myspace (www.myspace.com/therunawaysons) and my good friend Dan is their guitarist! I got there and caught up with him and his band put on probably the best performance of the night! They're an old school garage punk rock band that's bursting with energy. Lots of singalongs from the crowd. It was fantastic! I got their debut EP after the show and Dan gave me some stickers and buttons too! What a pal. 9/10

They played:

Kathleen Turner Overdrive
Jerk and Gyrate
Dr. Phil Harmonic
Loud Louder Loudest

among others.

The headlining band was Title Fight. It was an offdate from a bigger tour, yet they didn't grace the stage for longer than any of the opening bands. That's alright, though. They are a melodic hardcore/pop punk (not a dirty genre) band that can write catchy songs, but in a live setting, they can be kind of predictable. The crowd was pretty crazy throughout the performance, moshing, dancing, singing along, and there was even some stage diving. It was pretty entertaining. 8/10

They played:

Symmetry
Memorial Field
Loud and Clear
Evander

among others.

New Soulfly date?

On Ticketmaster, there's a listing for Soulfly + Prong at Midland Theater on March 23rd. Tix are less than $20.

That's surprising to me, because the last time I heard about Soulfly coming here was them playing at the Blue Goat in Salina.

American Carnage rescheduled!

American Carnage has been rescheduled, and will be hitting Sandstone on August 23rd. The line-up is Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament. Locals might open the show?

Awesome.
