October preview: The Black Dahlia Murder

On October 21st, you have a decision to make between two concerts:

Second choice is the return of modern melodeath masters The Black Dahlia Murder to the Granada in Lawrence. They're bringing along All Shall Perish and Cannabis Corpse, while Marasmus will be opening. Shred!

October: Always busy for metal

A couple of shows have just been announced for October!

First up:

The Black Dahlia Murder will be returning, YET AGAIN, to Lawrence to slay us! They'll be headlining The Granada in Lawrence on the strength of their new album, Ritual. Opening for them is All Shall Perish and Cannabis Corpse. The Black Dahlia Murder always have the best live shows, so get ready to headbang!

The next October show is quite a doozy:

WARBRINGER comes back to KC on their headlining tour for their new albums, Worlds Torn Asunder! It'll be at the Beaumont Club on October 30th (Halloween Eve!) with LaZarus A.D., Landmine Marathon, Diamond Plate, Vanlade and Meat Shank! Spoooooooooky!

Kansas City Mayhem Off-Date #1

The Mayhem Festival isn't coming to Kansas City again this year, but we're getting another round of off-dates!

#1 is:

Unearth
Suicide Silence
All Shall Perish
Red Fang

At the Granada in Lawrence on July 18th.

Summer Slaughter 2010 details

Surprised and disappointed at the same time.

Decapitated - Great to see them, and even though they probably won't be nearly as good as they were on the first Summer Slaughter, it'll be fun to see them.

The Faceless - Summer Slaughter is no longer Necrophagist's tour, it is now The Faceless' tour. They're perfectly fine, but Summer Slaughter should be reserved for other bands that don't get around as often as The Faceless.

All Shall Perish - Bored me the last time I saw them, but lots of people really like them, especially live. Maybe it'll be different.

The Red Chord - Heard outstanding things about their live show, but I've never been able to get into them at all.

Veil of Maya - Your run of the mill melodeath/metalcore/deathcore. Boring.

Cephalic Carnage - Could be a much better choice, but Cephalic Carnage will definitely be fun. SS needs as much grind as it can get at this point.

Decrepit Birth - Cool. Another fun band. Straight up death metal.

Carnifex - And now we see that the people behind Summer Slaughter are really reaching for strings. A trendy deathcore band. Worst band on this tour.

Animals As Leaders - Very weird. Instrumental progressive death metal. Actually not that bad, but definitely out of place at Summer Slaughter. A wasted slot.

Vital Remains - Probably the band I'm most excited about on this tour, but they're the lowest billed band. How is a legendary death metal band that's been around for 20 years that featured Glen Benton on vocals for their best albums and has ex-members from Suffocation, Monstrosity, Dying Fetus, Acheron, Incantation and Vile be billed below a couple flavor of the month "core" bands? A huge shame, hopefully the running order changes.

Dates TBA. Summer Slaughter was at the Bottleneck in Lawrence in 2007 but hasn't been back since.

Hate Eternal -- Lawrence, KS -- November 21st, 2008

I'm going to try and keep this clean. Kinda mad about tonight's concert. You can definitely find an unclean version of this review if you look hard enough.

Hate Eternal - 8.5/10
All Shall Perish - 5/10
Animosity - 4/10
Annotations Of An Autopsy - 3/10

AOAA is basically an English version of Waking The Cadaver. Terrible, contains mostly breakdowns, "bree bree" vocals, scene kids love it.

Animosity, to their credit, has alright instrument players, but the vocalist is god-awful. Terribly in the middle between high screams and low growls, but he settles most of the time for bree bree vocals or an almost nu-metal type scream. Scene kids love it.

All Shall Perish, at times, were enjoyable. The guitarists really have some talent and had some nice solos but, once again, it devolved into more breakdown, bree bree garbage. Scene kids love it.

The first, last, and only metal band (aka the only band with true talent that didn't rely on a gimmick) was Hate Eternal. Terrible sound quality at first really didn't stop them and they ended up being awesome, just like back in February. They played Catacombs, which is always good. Erik Rutan really is a metal god and he deserves every ounce of respect he garners.

Not really going to comment on the crowd aside from the fact that they were terrible. I cannot wait until the "deathcore" fad dies out.
