Lots of shows have been announced recently!
First up is Six Feet Under. This is the band featuring the original vocalist for Cannibal Corpse, Chris Barnes. They play death metal, but put their own twist of groove and rock and roll aesthetics on it. It should make for a very fun show! They'll be at the Granada in Lawrence on July 23rd. Support comes from Decrepit Birth and Cannabis Corpse!

Next up (I'm going out of order, here) is 3 Inches Of Blood at the Riot Room on May 19th. The response to their new album has been amazing, and they always put on a great performance! The only downside is that this is the same night as Katatonia at the Aftershock. Luckily the two venues aren't really far from each other, so it might be possible to see both shows. Opening for 3 Inches Of Blood is one of the best new bands around, Speedwolf!

Finally, after so long, Arsis returns to Kansas City for a headlining show! I've been waiting to see them forever. They'll be at the Riot Room on May 23rd, a Thursday, with Whoracle and Meat Shank opening. Can't wait!

After Cradle of Filth canceled their US tour, The Faceless hopped on Dillinger Escape Plan's tour. But what about their tourmates, Decapitated? Well, don't worry any longer. The Polish legends will be headlining a rare appearance at the Riot Room on Tuesday, May 21st. Unmerciful, Night Creation, and more open!

Upcoming Tour: COC + guests!
Corrosion of Conformity will be hitting the Beaumont Club in KC on March 9th! I'm not sure if this is still the Animosity line-up that they've been touring as for a while or not. Opening the show is Torche, Valient Thorr and A Storm Of Light. This will be one of the heaviest shows of the year!

Motorhead -- Kansas City, MO -- February 17th, 2011
Great show from all the bands, but WOW what a performance by Clutch. BUT FIRST:
I got to the venue right at eight o'clock, but the line was still stretched around the block. I hear Valient Thorr playing while I waited to get in and missed about half their set. Their sound mix wasn't all that great, but the band was as great as ever. Kansas City is their second home, so I'm sure I'll be seeing a lot of them very soon.
I finally did it! I lost my Clutch show virginity! And what a show it was! Neil was moving all around and the music sounded great. Lots of great grooves; it's impossible not to move around to the beat at a Clutch performance! Big News I was really good, but my favorite song they did was Immortal. That song sounds great live! Might be the best opening set I've ever seen. Big thanks to Brad and Jeff for helping me figure out their set!
Motorhead was Motorhead. Nothing more, nothing less. I will say I enjoyed them a bit more than the last time I saw them. Also wasn't as loud as I remember. Still awesome. Songs like "Rock Out" and "I Got Mine" were great, but my personal favorite was "Going to Brazil." It's just too much fun. The guitar solo was kind of lame, but the drum solo was great. Always fun to see this legendary band, so hopefully they'll be around a while longer!

Kansas City Is The Road Crew!
After playing one of the loudest shows ever at the venue, legendary band MOTORHEAD will be returning to the Midland on February 17th. Opening will be awesome rockers CLUTCH and spacemen and KC favorite VALIENT THORR.

Valient Thorr - Kansas City, MO -- October 3rd, 2010
The weather is getting cooler and that means the good tours should be kicking up all over the country. Valient Thorr has a long history with the Kansas City/Lawrence area since 2001 and with the rabid following and one of the best shows I've ever seen, it's not hard to see why.
Opening the show on a high note was Hammerlord and thanks to the Record Bar's wonderful sound system, they sounded better than any other time I've heard them. Ty and JP absolutely shredded their guitars to pieces and I had a lot of fun screaming along to "Tombstone Piledriver" with Stevie. A short opening set, but it just makes me want to see them even more!
It was my second time seeing Howl this year and overall. The last time was a few months ago in Lawrence on a weird bill consisting of Howl, Phobia and Black Cobra. I gotta say that Howl sounded much better this time. Very, very heavy and the vocals sounded absolutely menacing. I feel like they will continue to get bigger. A tour with Weedeater would be MASSIVE.
I'd actually never heard of Junius before, but apparently there were a few people in the audience who had waited a long time to see them live. I was blown away. The best way I can describe their sound (and I'm probably doing a horrible job) is: Alcest if they had doom/sludge instead of black metal. Or maybe Explosions In The Sky if they were pissed off (and with vocals!). Tons of great moments in their set that made me audibly say "Wow" more than once. Great stuff.
Valient Thorr's set wasn't so much an excellent musical performance as much as it was a bunch of fans getting together, having fun, and being happy whilst listening to one of the most energetic bands in the business today. Valient Himself kept the crowd smiling with positive reinforcement before and during songs, and some quirky anecdotes. "Did you know the Record Bar was the first place in America to have automatic paper towel dispensers?" I do now. During one song, he went out into the crowd, motioned for everyone to sit on the floor, and row/headbang along with the music. It was just random things like this that made this one of the funnest shows I've seen. The music was great, too. If AC/DC was metal and awesome, they'd be Valient Thorr. I can only hope they return from Venus to bless the KC area with their metal again soon.

After a very entertaining and rocking set opening for Mastodon a few months ago, Valient Thorr will be at the Record Bar in KC for a headlining show. With them will be Howl, Junius and our very own Hammerlord! It'll be on October 3rd, a Sunday!

Mastodon -- Lawrence, KS -- May 16th, 2010
I have a DVD of Andrew W.K. and it shows a clip of him performing somewhere on Sept. 11, 2002 and he says something about how we shouldn't remember the fallen with a moment of silence, but a moment of the loudest, most raucous noise we can muster up to celebrate their lives and accomplishments. For about 5 hours tonight in a college town in Kansas, Mastodon, Between The Buried And Me, Baroness, Valient Thorr and a ton of fans inside Liberty Hall honored and celebrated the fallen Ronnie James Dio with as much energy and noise as they could produce.
For some reason, I had some apprehensions about seeing Valient Thorr. Dunno if it's the combination of not liking the song of their's on Guitar Hero or being turned off that they have a shtick where they're aliens, but they were really fun and a great way to start off the show. They related what all their songs were about to the passing of Dio and then gave a really positive light on the whole drab situation. To describe Valient Thorr would be to imagine if AC/DC had formed in 2000 or if Motorhead was from Georgia. Equal parts rock and metal, the whole thing was a lot of fun, even if their sound wasn't the greatest.
Baroness got the first real big response of the night, and they blew my expectations away. Undoubtedly the heaviest band of the night, they would sound even better in a bigger place with better sound equipment. I was loving their set a lot. I recognized the songs they played off the Red album and even some from the Blue album, which I am really itching to hear more of now. I can only hope that they'll be back and soon.

Between The Buried And Me (BTBAM) is definitely the odd man out on this tour. Too progressive and too "core" for some in the crowd, but most of the people there loved it. They left a kinda bad taste in my mouth (at least live) after I saw them open for Children of Bodom in 2008, but they were much better this time around. All the members are brilliant musicians, especially the bassist. During Disease, Injury, Madness he had a solo which was just mind-blowing, probably the best bassist I've ever seen live. Would love to see them play a longer set.

Mastodon comes around these parts often, and the crowd tonight let them know just how much we appreciate it. After weeks of hearing about Brent being too drunk to play and storming off mid-set, leaving some shows to get cut short, he was absolutely brilliant tonight. The Mastodon I saw tonight is a band that deserves every ounce of praise they get and is standing on the edge of bigger and better things. The solo's on The Czar, The Last Baron, and an improvised solo before March Of The Fire Ants showed just what Brent can do, and the rest of the band was insane. They gave so much energy and the crowd gave it right back with crazy pits and tons of crowd surfing. One of the best performances I've heard from them.
At the end of the night, Brann came up to the mic from behind the drumkit to thank the crowd, and the last thing he said was "Rest in Peace, Mr. Ronnie James Dio." The crowd went absolutely nuts one last time, and thus ended the greatest celebration of a fallen legend's life that I've ever been witness to.

Mastodon returns. AGAIN.
Mastodon was here last October with Dethklok, High on Fire, and Converge. The show was awesome.
They were also here in August or September at the Granada.
And I know for a fact that they've played The Granada again at least once (with Converge) and The Bottleneck at least once opening for someone.
Well, they're back.
The Volcom Tour at Liberty Hall on May 16th (that's 6 days after Converge + Coalesce at the Bottleneck)
